Engine – comprehensive guide to spare parts, operation, fitting, troubleshooting, and upkeep
An engine is a unit which produces the torque required to move the vehicle. It is where the fuel burns, creating the force necessary to rotate the wheels. The engine also drives other important devices such as the alternator, coolant, and oil pumps.

Engine design
The main elements of reciprocating engines, which are the most common nowadays, include:
- Engine block – along with the cylinder head and crankcase, this makes up the body of the power unit. There are sleeves installed inside of cylinders. The engine block also contains passages for coolant.
- Cylinder head – this covers the cylinders from the side where the piston crowns are. It houses the combustion chambers, intake and exhaust channels with valves, and often a camshaft; sometimes the fuel injectors and spark plugs are located there too.
- Head gasket – this seals the joint between the cylinder head and engine block. It prevents coolant and oil leaking and mixing.
- Crankcase – this is attached to the bottom of the engine block. That is the place where the crankshaft is located. An oil pan is installed on the underside of the crankcase.
- Rotating assembly – this consists of pistons that are connected to the crankshaft via connecting rods and set it in motion. Pistons are fitted with oil control and compression rings. The former prevent oil from getting into combustion chambers and the latter keep gases away from the crankcase.
- Valvetrain – this includes a camshaft with valves and their actuators, pulleys, and a chain or a belt. The latter ensure distribution of the torque between the crankshaft and camshafts.
Maintenance advice
- Replace all the consumables in due time. This will help prevent carbon deposits building up on engine components. Piston rings should also be replaced as otherwise the piston may burn out due to leaking gases and local overheating.
- Use only high-quality petrol. Otherwise, engine knocking may occur, and this reduces the service life dramatically.
- Avoid engine overheating. Extremely high temperatures are dangerous for it.
- Make sure the fuel injection and ignition systems are operating correctly. Running too rich or too low causes engine knocking, gas leakage into the exhaust manifold, engine overheating, and other issues.
- When it’s cold outside, try not to put too much load on the engine components during the first few minutes after start-up. It’s better to wait until the oil heats up and its viscosity decreases to avoid oil starvation.
Symptoms of malfunction
Most malfunctions have similar symptoms and are followed by reduced power and strange sounds produced when the car is running. Failing valves and failing pistons with connecting rods can both make knocking sounds. The engine usually starts to consume more fuel, and oil consumption increases while the vehicle dynamics becomes significantly worse. When the head gasket burns out, a lot of white smoke comes out of the exhaust pipe. Sometimes you may even notice wet streaks on the engine body.
Causes of malfunction
The roots of most problems lie in engine overheating. This causes the head gasket to burn out, the cylinder head and engine block to deform, and even pistons to deteriorate. Insufficient lubricant leads to a great number of problems including damage to various engine bearings, piston conrods and other components. A snapped timing belt often causes valve damage and deformation.
